Sprint Queen - Girl from Banana Ground delivers in Rio
Sunday, August 21, 2016
Elaine Thompson emphatically crowned herself Jamaica’s new sprint queen at the just ended Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Thompson, from Banana Ground in east-central Manchester, just over the border from western Clarendon, first raced to victory in the 100 metres in 10.71 seconds. She returned four days later to claim the 200m gold medal, clocking 21.78 seconds. That made her the first Jamaican woman to win the 100m and 200m (sprint double) gold medals at the same Olympics. Thompson followed up by running the second leg on Jamaica’s silver medal team in the sprint relay.
